The Explorean Kohunlich has 38 Bungalows and 2 Cabanas that offer total privacy to experience tranquility and absolute relaxation, or to live a romantic getaway.

The Explorean Kohunlich is an intimate Resort that offers 38 bungalows and 2 cabanas. Each suite has been decorated with a regional and modern style to meet every guest’s need. All suites have private gardens on the back, to make of this space a more intimate one.

Bungalows:
Suites with two full beds or one king size bed, reading sofa within the room, bathroom, small porch and a hammock.

Cabanas:
If you are looking for a very intimate and spacious room, here you will have the perfect balance. The cabanas have a king size bed, a small porch, a bathroom, a small outdoors private pool and a terrace with a hammock.

With the purpose of keeping you away from the city’s resources, The Explorean does not have televisions in the suites. We want our guests to rest and feel the contact with nature.

The Explorean Kohunlich is located 45 minutes from the Chetumal City to 40 km east of the city of Chetumal and less than 20 north of Rio Hondo, natural border with Belize. Chetumal operates flights from major airports like the one in Mexico City, Cancun and Mérida, the hotel is located in the middle of the jungle Maya, 2 km from the archaeological site of Kohunlich.

KOHUNLICH
We will explore the archaeological site of “Los Mascarones” making a 1.2-mile bike tour and a walking tour within palm formed tunnels.

SITES IN CAMPECHE
We will visit the three archaeological sites of Campeche which are located 75km from The Explorean: Xpuhil, Becan and Chicaná.

CHICHAN HA
We will visit a forest reserve in the Ejido of Caobas and we will find the vestiges of a Franciscan convent of the XVI Century. An excellent opportunity to explore the jungle’s flora and fauna.

RAPPEL
We will travel until we reach a 70-meter high wall in the town of Paraiso, which stands 53 miles towards Campeche. This will be an excellent opportunity to explore the tall evergreen tropical forest of Quintana Roo’s south region.

BACALAR
We will travel 1hour and 15 minutes until we find the beautiful Lagoon of Bacalar. We will kayak through the crystalline waters of 7 colors and, if the wind favors it, we will have the opportunity to sail in a 9-foot Catamaran.

XUL HA
We will travel 1 hour until we find the town of Xul Ha. We will kayak through the channel that originates in the cenote of Xul-Ha and that will return us to Bacalar lagoon. We will let ourselves drift with the current and afterwards we return upriver.

CHAKANBAKAN
We will travel 40 minutes until we reach Chakanbakan Lagoon where we will have the opportunity to kayak between reed beds visiting the natural habitat of the Moreleti crocodile and other species of Flora and Fauna. This is an excellent chance to enjoy the jungle by night and discover the wonders that the night sky and darkness have to offer.

A typical day at The Explorean:

A day at The Explorean...
It is daybreak and outside your suite, a tray with hot coffee and freshly baked bread is waiting for you. The morning sun dazzles you and at the same time it announces the start of a new day, full of adventures and emotions, difficult to forget.

Walk towards the restaurant in the company of your couple and of the friends you have made during your stay. Here, our waiters are expecting you, far from giving you an á-la-carte menu, you can ask for the commonly known continental breakfast, exquisite scrambled eggs or even hot cakes with plenty of syrup or honey. Every small detail will make you feel at home.

Chakanbakán is today’s programmed adventure. Because it is scheduled for the afternoon, some guests decide to rest beside the pool where the birds whistle and the incomparable view of the Mayan jungle will submerse you in this mystic place. As the morning advances, you could take a refreshing drink or prepare yourself a delicious cocktail just as you would do so at home. Nowhere else have you felt so much freedom and tranquility as in The Explorean Kohunlich.

It is now lunchtime and our Executive Chef advices about the dishes he has prepared for today. You will always find two entrées, a first course and two second courses, always giving you alternatives between regional and international cuisine.

The moment has come to start our trip to Chakanbakan, all our guests are gathered in the Adventure Point. Our guides give you the final instructions; the adventure is about to begin!

During the trip, Daniel one of our guides speaks to the guests and recounts one of the many anecdotes that have occurred since the hotel opened its doors. Daniel announces your arrival within the next 5 minutes, the narrow road is now expanding and you can see several hotel vans parked. The guests are surprised to see several guides waiting for them with all the equipment ready to depart on kayak. Before hopping on, Daniel and the rest of the guides ask you to do warming up exercises, they explain how to use the lamp on your head, and everything is ready in order to begin the activity.

The kayak trip has begun! As one advances, the sounds of nature become more and more loud and intense. The only thing illuminating this gorgeous lagoon is the stars’ reflection and the light from our heads. Little by little, Daniel continues by showing the different types of animals that inhabit this zone, you can see herons, pelicans, armadillos and, if one runs with luck, you will observe the small Moreleti crocodiles appearing on the riverside.

As you direct the lights towards them, you can distinguish their small red eyes and parts of their bodies. Without a doubt a unique experience that you will always remember…

The journey continues and the guides stop and ask the adventurers to look up. The night sky is completely covered and illuminated by stars; the guests have not seen a night sky so clear and full of light, in a long time. Contrary to what one could desire, the trip has come to an end and an extraordinary surprise awaits our guests on their return.
